ONE People’s Campaign is pleased to announce we’re endorsing Sunjay Kumar in the 13th State House District! Sunjay Kumar is one of five candidates running to replace outgoing State Representative Hoan Huynh in the district that covers much of Uptown, Ravenswood, Bowmanville and Lincoln Square in the March 17, 2026 Democratic Primary.
Sunjay is a community organizer, a proud queer Indian American, and an Uptown resident. He was a frequent volunteer on the Bring Chicago Home Campaign, and he organized for over a decade with Asian American Midwest Progressives, on his college campus, and in other movement spaces. Our members recognized his track record fighting for progressive issues, his lived experience with many of the issues our members struggle with today, and his ability to build broad and diverse coalitions.
ONE People’s Campaign builds statewide power to advance progressive policies and endorses progressive candidates committed to advancing our shared values. Our membership engaged in an endorsement process over the last five months and believes Sunjay Kumar is the strongest champion of the issues we care most deeply about: affordable housing, community safety, universal access to healthcare and mental health services, addressing the climate crisis, fully and equitably funded public schools, immigrant justice, and funding social services through progressive revenue measures. Kumar’s rich organizing experience on our side of the movement will bring an important perspective to the halls of Springfield and will ensure our members have a true voice when it comes to governing and making critical decisions on our behalf.

- Sign up to door-knock to talk to voters about Sunjay at our first canvass launch on Saturday January 10th, 10am-2pm. No experience necessary, first time volunteers are welcome! Food and training will be provided.
- Sign up for our training for how to lead a canvass! We will have this training on Tuesday, January 20th from 6-7:30pm at our office, 4750 N Sheridan, Suite 200.
How we made this endorsement decision:
- Our board and political committee identified the 13th State House District open race as a top priority for our organization.
- Our Political Committee developed a candidate questionnaire and held small group meetings with some of the candidates who were running. They selected two candidates to come in for an interview with our membership.
- 60 of our members voted with overwhelming support to endorse Sunjay Kumar!
