What are Police District Councils?
During the upcoming election, Chicagoans have the chance to elect representatives who will have a say in public safety and community policing. On February 28, three representatives will be elected in each of Chicago’s 22 Police Districts. District Councils are a brand new elected office. They are the result of our years-long fight for civilian oversight of the police that resulted in the passage of the Empowering Communities for Public Safety (ECPS) ordinance in 2021!
What do the District Councils do?
District Council Members have the important task of conveying what ordinary Chicagoans actually want to the people who create our city’s public safety policies.
District Councils will:
- hold monthly public meetings with their community to gather feedback on policing and community safety.
- meet with the Chicago Police Department commander in their district to provide input and community oversight.
- expand restorative justice practices and implement community policing initiatives within their district.
- nominate candidates for the citywide Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability.

- proponer candidatos para la Comisión Comunitaria para la Seguridad Pública y la Rendición de Cuentas.
