ONE People’s Campaign’s Endorsements for the Chicago Municipal Elections
Northside Progressive Community Organization Announces its first set of endorsements for Alderman and Police District Council Races
ONE People’s Campaign (OPC) is pleased to endorse Angela Clay for 46th ward alderperson and 3 slates of candidates running for the newly created police district councils in the 19th, 20th and 24th police districts in the 2023 municipal elections.
In a crowded field in the 46th ward, Angela Clay stood out as the strongest champion for the issues of affordable housing, police accountability, access to mental health services, climate change mitigation and adaptation, fully and equitably funded public schools, and progressive revenue sources for the city budget. ONE People’s Campaign has over 1,000 members eligible to vote in the 46th ward race.
“I’m honored to accept this endorsement and truly am grateful to have the support of our neighbors. I began organizing with ONE People’s Campaign and its sister organizations when I was fourteen years old! This is monumental for our neighbors to support a home grown candidate from the 46 Ward that was molded by an organization that has been a pillar for equitable change in our community for decades. I look forward to working side-by-side with ONE People’s Campaign to advance solutions for affordable housing and the other resources our families need,” said Angela Clay.
“As a 4th generation Uptown resident, who grew up in subsidized housing and is a graduate of the ward’s public schools, Angela has a deep understanding of the struggles the 46th ward faces and the gifts that make it unique. Our members felt confident she would be the strongest champion to fight against the displacement of Uptown’s Black, Brown, low-income, and working class households. She emphasized over and over again that her vision is to govern side by side with the community and organization’s like ours, and that her campaign is about making sure everyone has a voice in city hall, not just wealthy and powerful,” said Lamont Burnett, member of the OPC Chicago Political Committee and 46th ward resident.
For the Police District Council seats that were established by the Empowering Communities for Public Safety Ordinance (ECPS), which passed in July 2021, ONE People’s Campaign endorsed three slates in the north side police districts. The ECPS ordinance creates a powerful new system for public safety and police accountability. On February 28, 2023, voters will elect their alderperson, the mayor and three community leaders to serve on District Councils in each of Chicago’s 22 police districts. These District Council residents will work with local residents to hold Chicago police accountable and keep our neighborhoods safe.
ONE People’s Campaign endorsed:
- 19th Police District (covering parts of the 44th, 46th and 47th wards): Maurilio Garcia, Jenny Schaffer, and Sam Schoenburg
- 20th Police District (covering parts of the 40th, 48th, 49th, and 50th wards): Darrell Dacres, Deirdre O’Connor, and Anna Rubin
- 24th Police District (covering parts of the 49th and 50th wards): Veronica Arreola, EdVetté Jones, and Rev. Dr. Marilyn Pagán-Banks
These candidates are committed to using these elected positions to 1) increase community involvement and voice in our current policing system; 2) increase community control of the police by making recommendations to the new ECPS Commission, which has authority to write and approve CPD policy, on best practices and identifying systemic abuses that need to be addressed; and 3) expanding and implementing community alternatives to the police.
“I look forward to working with a coalition that will promote the equity and safety of all people in Chicago. I’m pleased to work alongside OPC and its powerful members as we continue to re-envision public safety in the 20th District,” said Deirdre O’Connor, 20th District Candidate.
“We are thrilled and honored to have OPC’s endorsement. From the beginning, we have been dedicated to building community power for better public safety. Having a partner like OPC committed to creating transformative systems of justice will strengthen the impact of our collective work,” said Jenny Schaffer, 19th District Candidate, on behalf of the slate.
“An endorsement from OPC means people power and community-centered values backing up the vital work of police accountability and generative solutions to community wellness grounded in the gifts and resources within the community. ¡Estoy muy orgullosa por este gran apoyo!” said Rev. Dr. Marilyn Pagan-Banks, 24th District Candidate.
